Spectrally resolved imaging of the giant black holes in AGN's has become a central long term goal of astrophysics and MAXIM (Micro Arcsecond X-ray Imaging Mission) is now embodied in Beyond Einstein as the Black Hole Imager. We will list some of the exciting science goals, review the progress in architecture that has made the mission viable, and discuss the challenges that remain.
