Near IR Observations of the SGR 0526-66 Region Around N 49 in the LMC

We present a near-infrared survey of the N 49 region with VLT/ISAAC. These observations reveal a nearby stellar cluster. The progenitor of magnetar SGR 0526-66, located in N 49, may have originated in this cluster. We discuss the constraints on soft gamma repeater progenitors that follow from these data.
