This presentation will describe the strategy PNNL has developed for
managing the Lab's graphic resources. We all have thousands of images that we use every
day, in presentations, on web sites, and in documents. PNNL realized that these
images are an important resource to the lab. We started with an image archive on a web
site, called DigiSource. DigiSource contains over 500 images that can be used for
developing marketing materials. Staff submit their images to DigiSource by filling out a
form that captures "meta data" about the resource. This includes information
such as photo numbers, data of photo, and background material. After the image is
submitted DigiSource converts it to several standard file types and sizes and then routes
it through an electronic approval process. Once the image is approved it is published to
DigiSource. Users can browse the thumbnail catalog of all the images, or use a powerful
search engine to zero in on a particular image.
After DigiSource was rolled out we decided that a subset of the images should be made
available to the public via an external version of the web site. That site is at http://picturethis.pnl.gov. PictureThis is populated
directly from DigiSource.
The next step in the strategy is to roll out a site that will manage PowerPoint
presentations. This site will be based on some of the same principles as Digisource.
The presentation will describe how the different sites were built and will also have demos
of DigiSource, PictureThis and PresentationSource (the PowerPoint web site). |
