ERCAP: A Collaborative System for Proposals, Reviews, and Resource Allocation at NERSC

Speaker:  John McCarthy
National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)
Organization:  Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)
Abstract:

Since it moved to Berkeley National Lab in 1996, the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) has been developing and using a web-database application to help Principal Investigators apply for NERSC resources. Over the past four years, this Energy Research Computing Allocations Process (ERCAP) system has become a key tool for collaboration between PI's, peer reviewers, Department of Energy Program Managers, and NERSC staff.  ERCAP currently uses the following technologies:

  • Oracle Database Management System for proposals, reviews, and awards data plus metadata

  • Seeker Software Framework and Embedded SQL engine for flow control and database access

  • Netscape Enterprise Server and NSAPI, which works in conjunction with the ESQL engine

  • TCCS (Trivial Configuration Control System) for source code control

  • Silktest regression testing software, for automated testing of web forms

This talk will discuss the architecture, development, and operation of ERCAP to date.
