Many DOE activities (civilian research, defense research
and development, production and stockpile assurance) entail the production, dissemination,
or sharing of information. The XML family of standards can greatly facilitate the
interchange of information (data, metadata, documents, CAD designs,...) among the DOE
national labs, DOE, vendors, and the larger scientific community.
In this talk we describe some of the major prospective applications to
realize such XML-mediated information sharing, additional standards and tools required
(XMI, metadata registries, ...). We suggest an agenda of research, standards, and
software development to hasten such information sharing. Applications
range from administrative (reporting, budgeting, procurement, etc.) to scientific
publication, to CAD design exchange, to metadata/data exchange for scientific and toxics
management purposes. |
