Abstract

Does the perfect safety system exist? Does it exist a safety system not dangerous for people, working in any accidental situation, cheap, simple, operational by everybody and at anytime without causing any collateral damage…and, of course, environmental friendly? Unfortunately this “jewel of the technology” does not exist, and most probably will never exist; safety is often the art of compromise, an art where collateral damages, unexpected delays and human errors cannot be eliminated but have to be reduced to the minimum. In the CMS and ATLAS experiments lots of efforts have been put to find the best safety system for each hazard and location. The next and extremely important step will be the preparation of the safety procedures necessary to operate the foreseen systems properly, safely and without undesired delay, errors or damages. This talk gives an overview of the safety concept for the two big particle physics experiments. Emphasize is given to the fire protection and evacuation with the corresponding emergency procedures.
