Welcome Reception August 12

There will be a welcome reception for Summer Institute participants and their families on Sunday, August 12, 2001 from 3:00PM to 8:00PM.  The reception will be at the Elliott Program Center on the Stanford University Campus (www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/campus-map.html).

Conference Dinners August 14, 16, 21, 23

Our conference dinners are a tradition and a great forum for meeting your fellow colleagues and a chance to make new connections in your field. The dinner packages cost $50 for four dinners for regular participants and $25 for four dinners for student participants.  Comparing the price with area restaurants illustrates that they are an exceptional value.

Lick Observatory Tour August 17

We have arranged a special evening tour of the Lick Observatory (http://www.ucolick.org/) on the evening of Friday, August 17, 2001 for participants of the SLAC Summer Institute. The observatory is able to handle only 40 people for the tour (adults only). The cost of the tour is $35.00 per person. This includes transportation to the observatory, entrance fee, and a box lunch to bring along with you. Buses will leave from SLAC at 3:30 PM to arrive at the observatory by 6:00 PM. There will be a sign-up sheet for the tour during registration. At that time you may sign up for the tour and pay by cash, check (drawn on a US bank), money order or credit card. Because of the limited space, only the first 40 people who sign up and pay for the tour will be allowed to go.

At the Observatory, you can look forward to seeing the 120-inch reflecting telescope (the main research instrument used by the astronomers at Lick), and learning about the ongoing research in astronomy and astrophysics, and, weather permitting, viewing astronomical objects through the 36-inch refracting telescope. There is also a gift shop where you may purchase photographs, posters, booklets and T-shirts.

Saturday Excursion August 18

Buses will be available on Saturday morning, August 18 to take participants and their families to San Francisco for an unguided tour. Buses will leave Governor's Corner at 8:30 AM on Saturday morning. Buses will drop off participants at two locations in San Francisco:

North Beach - close to Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz Island, ferries to Angel Island, Tiburon, and Sausalito.

Union Square - close to Chinatown, San Francisco Shopping Centre, Museum of Modern Art, among other attractions and points of interest.

You will be picked up at the same location you are dropped off (at a specified location in North Beach or Union Square) at 5:00 PM and returned to Governor's Corner at about 6:00 PM.

The cost for the San Francisco excursion is $18.00 per person. This covers the cost of the bus. It's actually a great deal, because parking in San Francisco is at a premium and can be costly for an entire day. Inside your registration packet, you will find an interesting and detailed Guide to San Francisco written by one of our SLAC physicists who is a resident of San Francisco. You may sign up and pay for the tour at the time you register. You may pay for the tour by cash, check (drawn on a US bank), money order or credit card.
