AbstractWe here present the discovery of oxygen chain formation in the charge reservoir of the model high- temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d. Using diffuse X-ray scattering at a synchrotron light source and high-quality single crystals, we observe a displacement based superstructure throughout reciprocal space. Careful analysis of the intensity pattern as well as a rudimentary study of the doping and temperature dependence all point toward the formation of oxygen chains in the charge reservoir of this superconductor. The chain length is measured to be between 15 and 18 atoms long depending on the sample studied.
