AbstractThis introductory talk of the workshop will give a background to what electronic and structural information x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) edges provide, and put into context how this information, alone or combined with EXAFS and/or other spectroscopic techniques enable unique chemical or biological knowledge. It will also address the growing development and application of theoretical approaches for the calculation/interpretation of edge structure. Finally, experimental aspects in the measurements of XAS edge data will be considered.
