| Abstract | The LCLS will enable unprecedented breakthroughs for the AMO and Chemistry Communities, paralleling those with lasers but at much shorter wavelengths. The study of the interaction of the LCLS with atoms, molecules, clusters and their ions will thrive with the SLAC FEL unexplored photon energy regime. Investigations may reveal new aspects of atomic, molecular and clusters structure and dynamics. The AMO instrument, which will be the first online at the LCLS, will be presented in light of its latest drawings. We will discuss possible enhancement and future instrumental needs for the community. Scientific opportunities and technical challenges for x-ray FEL gas-phase experiments will be discussed.
