AbstractThe LCLS free-electron x-ray laser will be the first coherent radiation source capable of non-linear interactions with core electrons. The relaxation times for core excitations are faster than the nuclear motions in molecules. By triggering photochemical reactions with an ultrafast optical laser, we will be able to probe the changing intra-molecular environment by its dynamic effect on core level excitations and decay. In this talk, I will discuss some initial time resolved laser pump/x-ray probe opportunities at the LCLS and how these opportunities can move us toward a deeper understanding of electron behavior in molecules.
