| Abstract | In order to understand the origin of the coupled magnetic and ferroelectric properties observed in the RMn2O5 and hexagonal
RMnO3 systems, detailed temperature and magnetic field dependent local structure measurements have been performed. The local structure about the rare earth (R) and the Mn sites have been examined. The R sites are seen to play an important role in these materials. Measurements over a abroad range of temperatures are presented and estimates of the changes in atomic bond distances are given. The local structural measurements are complemented by density functional computations to explore the possible phonon modes involved in the spin-lattice coupling. High pressure x-ray diffraction measurements provide clues on the low temperature distortion patterns in the hexagonal systems. Comparisons with optical measurements are also made. |
