Abstract

We report new results from the Subpicosecond Pulse Source (SPPS) demonstrating the ability of accelerator-based x-ray sources to resolve atomic-scale motion with femtosecond temporal resolution. It is shown that the short-time-scale dynamics associated with ultrafast solid-liquid phase transitions is inertial in character, pointing to analogies with the intrinsic dynamics of equilibrium liquids.
