Abstract

We present EXAFS data on several perovskite manganite samples (La1-xCaxMnO3) in the range 0.2 < x < 0.5 over a temperature scale of 5-350 K and over an applied magnetic field of 0-11T. Changes in local structure as T is reduced below Tc and the sample becomes magnetic are clearly related to the hole concentration, x, in the sample. This relationship provides the basis for a model of the development of the magnetization. In this model, the ferromagnetic metal phase forms in filamentary clusters interspersed with a paramagnetic insulating phase. This model is similar to cluster formation and phase separation proposed by other authors.
