XPP Instrument Information

X-ray Pump-Probe Instrument

The XPP instrument is being designed to utilize hard x-rays from the LCLS in the photon energy range over approximately 4000-25000 eV. The instrument is designed to study the photon-matter interaction in biological, chemical and condensed matter systems. The unprecedented flux and time resolution of the LCLS will permit experimental investigation of structural dynamics with X-ray techniques during the course of a photo-induced transformation. Femtosecond-level synchronization between an optical laser and the LCLS X-ray pulse will allow sub-picosecond time resolution.

Full design includes:

  • x-ray optics
    • focusing optics to achieve a beam size of a few microns in the interaction region
    • monochromator system
    • attenuator system
    • mirror system
    • apertures
  • x-ray area detector
  • x-ray diffractometer system
    • tilt platform
    • kappa goniometer
    • detector positioning system
  • ultrafast laser system
