Polarization of X-ray emission lines from clusters of galaxies

The hot gas in rich clusters of galaxies and especially cooler central regions can be moderately optically thick in the brightest X-ray emission lines. Resonant scattering of these lines not only modifies the surface brightness profiles of clusters but also polarizes line emission. For spatially resolved observations the degree of polarization can be of the order of 10% for clusters like Coma or Perseus. The degree of polarization is sensitive to the presence of even slow gas differential motions and could provide valuable independent information on the gas velocity field and small-scale turbulent motions.
