It has long been recognized that the thermal X-ray radiation from magnetic neutron stars is highly polarized. I will review the basic polarization properties of neutron star atmosphere emission. I will also discuss the vacuum resonance phenomenon which gives rise to a surprising X-ray polarization signature, potentially detectable by future X-ray polarimeters. Reference: D. Lai & W.
