I will outline the processes, mainly quantum electrodynamic in nature, that are important for the preservation and evolution of the polarization of X-ray radiation as it travels through the magnetospheres of strongly (and not so strongly) magnetized neutron stars. The signatures of these processes could be observed with the next generation of x-ray polarimeters.
