I will discuss the nature of processes specific to atomic emission lines than can give rise to polarization in astrophysical sources. Similarly to the production of polarized bremsstrahlung in e.g. solar flares, beamed or directed electrons can produce polarization signatures in the line emission they collisionally excite. Possibilities to exploit the diagnostic potential of such processes may exist in the more non-thermal regions of solar/stellar coronae and flares, but are most exciting in the more collisionless plasma associated with shock waves in supernova remnants and the interstellar medium. Work supported by basic research funds of the Office of Naval Research.
