SLAC tours will take place during the conference sessions, in groups of 25. Each tour will take approx 1 hour. The tour will include visiting the Klystron Gallery and the Main Control Center (MCC). The bus will leave at:
In addition we are organizing a 30 min tour through the Visualization Lab at the Fred Kavli Building (same building where the conference takes place). These tours will start at:
Sign up sheets for each of these tours will be available near the place where you pick up your badge for these who signed up for the SLAC tour during registration.
More about the SLAC Linac (Klystron Visitor’s Alcove)
SLAC’s two-mile linear accelerator is housed beneath one of the longest
buildings in the world, the Klystron Gallery. After more than 40 years
of producing high-energy electrons for cutting-edge physics experiments,
the linac now serves as the backbone for the world’s first hard x-ray free
electron laser, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS).
More about the Visualization Lab
Researchers at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology
(KIPAC) are revolutionizing the way we understand the universe. The Kavli
Building at SLAC is home to a state-of-the-art visualization laboratory where
animations are designed and screened to help scientists and visitors alike
conceptualize the birth of a star, the early universe, black holes and dark
matter.
The Stanford tour will take place on first day of the conference, beginning after the last session and finishing near the reception/dinner. Two buses will depart from SLAC (near Kavli lobby where registration desk) at 5:30pm and drop off sightseers at Stanford near the Cantor Art Center. From there, a SLACer will guide the group on a ~1 mile tour through some of the interesting parts of Stanford and finish near the reception. Alternatively, sightseers may opt to discover Stanford on their own as they wish.
